China's Role in the UN

    China, as the largest developing country and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, embraces the noble ideals of the UN by contributing to humanity's cause of peace and development and proactively promoting the collective progress of humanity towards a shared future.

    ​In December 2018, China agreed to provide a larger portion of the money for the United Nations' peacekeeping efforts. They increased their share from 10.24 percent to 15.22 percent for the years 2019-2021. This means that China is now the second biggest contributor to the UN peacekeeping budget, just after the United States. China has sent more than 40,000 peacekeepers to more than 30 missions, which is more than any other country in the Security Council. The UN and the countries where the peacekeepers are sent have praised China's peacekeepers for their good behavior and professionalism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, China has actively helped the UN's plan to respond to the crisis. They donated 50 million U.S. dollars in cash to the World Health Organization and provided assistance to over 150 countries and international organizations. They also sent medical supplies to more than 200 countries and regions.

    How China can contribute to the well-being of humanity

    • Implementing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) sustainably: China is promoting a green BRI, focusing on cooperation in green infrastructure, green energy, and green transportation with partner countries. By ensuring that BRI projects adhere to high environmental standards, China can support sustainable development across multiple regions.

    • In 2017, China published a plan focused on fostering BRI environmental cooperation and a guideline detailing the nation's road map for green development. In 2022, China issued guidelines for outbound investment that include requirements for environmental risk assessments and prioritize issues like hazardous waste disposal and greenhouse gas emissions
